They shared a century, artistic movements and common subjects. Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas have marked the history of art with their unique brushstrokes. But if everything brings these two artists together, both their styles and personalities make them true opposites. Manet shocks, breaks the codes and avoids the trends. Degas is avant-garde, refuses to be put in a box and has no artistic limits. The Manet Degas exhibition in Orsay traces the special relationship between the two men through their paintings.

The friendship between Degas and Manet surpasses their very different tastes for cultural and artistic activities such as literature or music. Both from middle-class families, they turned to their common love of art. Their rivalry was only matched by their complicity, that same one strengthened after the Franco-German war of 1870 in which both men participated. Their artistic development differs but their subjects remain common, their styles complementing each other perfectly. One admires the other, as evidenced by the many portraits of Manet painted by Degas.

In this exhibition Manet Degas, the Musée d’Orsay has enriched its collection of approximately 200 works around a chronological route, enabling the exploration of both painters’ artistic work from their youth to the end of their lives.
